HADDYDINO / HADROSAURUS FOULKII

Hadrosaurus foulkii

The 1858 discovery that helped transform paleontology

Large fossil bones were first noticed during marl digging on the Hopkins property in the late 1830s. In 1858 William Parker Foulke returned to investigate, and paleontologist Joseph Leidy studied the remains and named Hadrosaurus foulkii.

The partial skeleton — though lacking a complete skull — was exceptionally informative for its time. In 1868 a mounted reconstruction was exhibited at Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences. Hadrosaurus foulkii is New Jersey's state dinosaur.
